Retiree Gerald Laubach needs your prayers...

The daughter of retiree Gerald Laubach writes:

I thought you and Chief McManus would want to know about Gerald's current location and condition.

He had been in various hospitals for the past several weeks after collapsing and being found unresponsive while at the St. Luke's Hospital. And, after several related problems, was transported to the Kindred Rehab Hospital for a while but is now in the Meridian Nursing Home (at 7181 Crestway, San Antonio, Texas 78239) in room 404. The phone number to the nursing home is (210) 599-3005. Visiting hours are up to 10:30pm. Unfortunately, it is the only Nursing Home in San Antonio that will take patients on ventilators, and although it's a bit "worn around the edges", it does provide the therapies and special care that Gerald needs at this time.

Gerald is not doing as well as hoped and had to have a tracheotomy because he was unable to breath properly on his own, and he also required a feeding tube to ensure that he is getting the nourishment that is required for the healing process. He developed a MRSA infection while at St. Luke's Hospital, however it is only contagious through physical contact, but (as a precaution) visitors must wash their hands and wear surgical gloves when visiting him. He also developed double pneumonia, and is being treated for that as well.

He is very week, can't walk, talk, eat, drink, or breathe on his own.  Because of the tracheotomy, communication can be difficult and is often frustrating for Gerald and his visitors (even his family). At this point, we can only pray that he will recover his ability to breath and eat on his own after undergoing Respiratory Therapy as well as Physical Therapy at the Meridian Nursing Home. He will most likely be at the Meridian for some time, perhaps several months. In the meantime, he's getting the best possible care.

Please extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the SAPD Officers who have visited Gerald over the past several months, both at Haven's Inn and in the various hospitals he's been at. Their visits have given Gerald much pleasure and happiness, and (if possible) he would enjoy more visits from his fellow SAPD Officers. And thank you for the help you've provided during this family crisis. Please keep him in your prayers.

Sincerely,

Debra Swager-Laubach

I hope this message teaches you. Gerald was one of my best friend back in the 80's and the bravest police officer I ever worked with. I feel bad because I didn't know he was ill and I just found out that he has passed on. Wow I'm so sorry I wasn't there for him.
