CoffeeCops recently received a cautionary message from a retiree alerting folks to protect their most valuable asset; Personal Information
He realized how easy it is to find your personal information on the internet and often times we have no control over our own data. Luckily, our retiree found a website associated with genealogy that had is personal information listed and a way to opt out of this website. Our retiree said “ I was listed on that website two different times. My friend that sent it to me owns a software company and he is very careful about anything he sends out. I sent it to many of my friends and those that looked at it and found their information as well and opted out. I sent it as an FYI in case anyone was interested. Thanks, mike.”
“I went to opt out and found out several friends and family on there, associated with me! Deleted both listings for me.”
This is the website that may have your personal information listed. A step by step way to opt out of information about you is included below. Remember to go back and opt out again under any other listings you find for yourself.

Opt Out - FamilyTreeNow.com
www.familytreenow.com
If you would like to opt out of living people and other records please follow the below procedure exactly. Please read through all steps before starting.
The good news is, opting out is a pretty simple procedure. Follow these steps:
1. This will direct you to the Family Tree Now Opt Out page. Once there, click the "Begin Opt Out Procedure" button. This is an important link!
2. After clicking on the Begin Opt Out Procedure button, you will be taken to a search page. Run a search for yourself.
3. Click on the “Record Detail.” Verify that this record is you and not someone else with the same name.
4. When you are positive that it's your record, then click the red "Opt Out" button.
REMEMBER: This is only one site on the web that may carry information about you. Opting Out of information found on FamilyTreeNow will not necessarily remove the same information found on other site. But at least we can try to minimize unwanted exposure to the illegitimate use of our information.
