Death of Active Officer * Notification of next of kin, if death occurs on-duty; * Transportation to hospital for family members; * Notification of the SAPD chaplain; * Assistance in making funeral arrangements; * Assistance in arranging immediate financial aid; * Assistance in preparing necessary paperwork to apply for all eligible benefits; and * Counseling for family members of officers killed in the line of duty. B. Death of Retired Officer * Assistance with contacting the Honor Guard to request the services provided for retirees; and * Family counseling and advice if requested. * Notification of the SAPD chaplain; * Assistance in making funeral arrangements; * Assistance in preparing necessary paperwork to apply for all eligible benefits; While there are numerous other life occurrences that may impact our member’s lives, there are other resources available within the City organization or the SAPOA. Vargas was born on March 12, 1949 in San Antonio, Texas and passed away on May 18, 2020 in Tucson, Arizona. Was on the SAPD and was in Cadet Class 1972D. He was a member of the first SWAT team He left the SAPD and joined Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). He was a decorated Vietnam Veteran earning numerous Bronze stars. He will be extremely missed by his five siblings, 17 nieces and nephews, three children and four grandchildren. Reece "Huicho" as most us knew him, was an honorable and authentic man. He was bigger than life, he left an unmatched legacy behind, ranging from his days as a motorcycle cop, narcotics detective, Chief Deputy of the BCSO, and finally as Chief of the Airport Police. He was at the Care facility in Boerne over the past few months. Reece is now at peace. He is survived by his wife Catherine, two daughters and three grandchildren. She reported that he passed in his sleep around 430am this morning (Thank you Lord)...she is doing as well as could be expected under the circumstances.
